Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

Service Description

In the case of more advanced gum disease, we will recommend a deep cleaning. This procedure, called scaling and root planing, or periodontal therapy removes plaque and tartar that linger on teeth below the gum line and smoothes the root surfaces where bacteria collect. It is usually done one quadrant of the mouth at a time while the area is numb.  Periodontal therapy is recommended to help treat the infection in your gums and to prevent further destruction of bone from the disease. If necessary, your hygienist will also apply a topical antimicrobial that continues to fight infection after your cleaning.
